The 13th Times a Charm
From Poverty to Astounding Success in 5 Years

ALISO VIEJO, CA, July 9, 2007 – Five years ago, Wayne Furlong was living in the sun drenched seaside resort of Springer Island, an upscale community situated literally on an island just off the southeastern coast of Florida near Palm Beach. The caveat?   “I lived in the car park, in a car, because I couldn’t afford two houses.”   A business opportunity that didn’t pan out had left Furlong and his wife locked into a year-long lease on a house in Cape Canaveral, about 2-3 hours north of where Wayne eventually found work on a boat. Unable to afford an apartment on his meager $350 a week, Wayne recalls the challenges he faced living out of his car: “I can remember going into the gas station and putting my feet in the sink to wash up, and drying my hair with the hot air blower.”

And the car?  The car was another story altogether; imagine a 22 year-old klunker with rotted floorboards and no gas tank. Yes, you read that right, no gas tank. “I had a one and a half-gallon plastic gas tub I kept in the backseat; and I knew it would go exactly 47 miles before it would run out.”   Hoarding quarters and nickels for his twice-a-week McDonald’s 25-cent hamburger special, one afternoon a police officer found him parked on the side of the freeway searching for something on the busy interstate.  He pulled over, wondering what could possibly be so important that would cause someone to pull such a risky move. Upon the officer’s arrival Furlong explained that he had lost 3 quarters through the floorboards while driving. The officer laughed as Furlong found the quarters and displayed them, adding “You don’t understand, this is my breakfast, lunch and dinner today!”

Interestingly, although Furlong has attained incredible success in his newfound career, he’s determined not to forget those times, and readily shares the memories that some would rather forget.  With a wry humor he explains that it was his persistence and sheer force of will to succeed that led him through those dark times.  “Persistence is what most real estate agents lack these days,” Furlong continues.  “They door-knock for a couple of days and then quit!”  Indeed it was Furlong’s own persistence that led him to where he is today, just five short years later; a multiple award winner who took home EXIT Realty’s top honor, the Tri-Real-a-Thon Award, in recognition of his record-shattering accomplishment of closing 1055 sales transactions in 1015 days; literally, a deal a day for 3 solid years.

Not satisfied to rest on his real estate laurels, most recently Furlong decided to branch out into the brokerage arena and bring on a few agents.  True to form, Furlong’s dogged persistence eventually got him there.  “I have dyslexia, so tests are hard for me.  I went back for my broker’s test 13 times! People ask me if I’m ashamed of that and I say no; ask me anything outside of the classroom and I can tell you, I just have a hard time during the test.”  Furlong pursued the expansion of his business with the same can-do attitude that made him a successful agent; bringing on twice as many agents in the first year as most brokers do in five.  Keeping up that momentum, he’s now up to 70-plus agents on his team, and is growing every month.  Be sure to tune into this week’s call for a double-shot of inspiration and motivation from who truly is a “Rags to Riches” real estate story.
